Things you need to know about Steep and flat Corneal Meridian

Eyes are one of the greatest blessings of God towards his beings. We can never realize the importance of eyes until and unless our eyesight gets weak or blurry. The branch of medicine that deals with the treatment and cure of eye is known as ophthalmology. People suffer from different kinds of eye diseases and eye related injuries that must be treated as soon as possible. Human eye is quite complicated structure that is composed of multiple layers like sclera and cornea. Number of retinal blood vessels along with the combination of optic nerves helps in proper functioning of an eye. Pupil controls the amount of light entry and lens helps in the direct focusing of light to the retina. To understand the anatomy of an eye surely needs a separate article of its own. However; we are going to focus towards the functioning of cornea and the diseases related to that part of an eye. In this article; we will be focusing on the things that one needs to know about steep and flat corneal meridian.

Cornea is like an entry gate of an eye which controls the amount of light rays that enters and strikes the lens. Various diseases are related to the cornea of the eye including keratitis which causes inflammation of the cornea. Then there is dry eye in which eyes remain dry and do not produce enough tears. Corneal dystrophy is another such cornea related disease that results in blurry or cloudy visions. Redness of eyes, inflammation; sensitivity to light, tearing and pain are considered as some of the common causes of corneal diseases.

Astigmatism is another such corneal disease which occurs due to the more inclination of cornea in one side as compared to another. There is corneal astigmatism as well as lens astigmatism. Corneal astigmatism occurs when the cornea of an eye has unequal curves. On the other hand; in lens astigmatism the lens of an eye has unequal curves.

Keratometry is the branch which focuses in the measurements of cornea of an eye. It reads the measurement of the anterior surface of cornea which is usually around 2-3mm. this branch of ophthalmology is used to measure the corneal astigmatism. This measurement is taken by calculating the radius of curvature of cornea. It detects the irregular astigmatism and also assesses the refractive error.

Steep corneal meridian:

Meridian is the kind of imaginary lines that are drawn around the centre of a pupil to intersect and eye. This helps in taking the measurement of an eye easily and to focus on the parts clearly. There is flat meridian as well as steep meridian. The flattest eye meridian and the steepest eye meridian are known as the principal meridians of an eye.

Steep cornea is the kind of a condition in which the centre of a cornea thins and starts to bulge outwards and forms a rounded cone shape. Steep corneal meridian is such kind of axis that is defined in degrees. In its measurement; the radius of the curvature is shortest and its power is greatest. Keratometry is used to take measurements from which the stage of the steep cornea can be assessed.

Flat corneal meridian:

Flat cornea is basically the condition in which cornea is rounded interiorly. It does not focus light on the retina but behind which is termed as far sightedness. The measurement taken of the axis of flat cornea is known as flat corneal meridian.

The anatomy of human eye is quite complex as it consists of various parts and nerves. Cornea is one such part of a human eye which helps in directing the light rays to the lens of pupil. A little deformation in the curvature of a cornea can lead to eye conditions known as flat cornea and steep cornea. To take the measurements of these eye conditions correctly so to treat it accordingly; the respective processes of steep corneal meridian and flat corneal meridian are carried out.
